Education, Teaching and Childhood Studies courses

Our programmes enable you to make a real difference to the lives of children, young people and adults. At Hull, Education, Teaching and Childhood Studies is part of the School of Education, which sits in the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education.


Our strong partnerships with hundreds of schools, colleges, community organisations and early years settings give you the opportunity to apply theory to real-world situations.

Foundation year

Gives you the skills and knowledge for entry on to a degree if you don’t quite meet the academic entry requirements.

Study abroad

We have partnerships with universities across the globe. Depending on your course, you can study for one trimester, or a full year, in another country.

Industrial placement

Work in industry as part of your degree. Depending on your course, you can spend part of your degree on placement. See your course page for specific details.

Integrated Masters

Some courses combine undergraduate and postgraduate study. The integrated Masters year is an extra year after your standard degree.

  • FdEd Early Childhood Studies

    This foundation degree is ideal for child-minders, pre-school learning leaders and early-years practitioners. Develop valuable knowledge while you work.

  • Education and Early Years (1 year top-up)

    Ideal for those aspiring for a professional role in the early education sector, this one-year course is a top-up for students with a foundation degree.

  • Education, Society and Culture (top-up) (part-time)

  • Learning and Teaching (Primary Education) (top-up)

    This course allows you to top-up to a full Honours degree as well as be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at Key Stages 1 and 2.

    The Maths Subject Knowledge Enhancement programme is aimed at graduates from any degree, who have been offered a place on an Initial Teacher Training programme.

    The French Subject Knowledge Enhancement programme is designed for graduate linguists who have been offered a place on an Initial Teacher Training course.

Our broad range of programmes means that you can concentrate on a particular area or age range, using advanced teaching methods taught by our expert staff whose research spans a range of fascinating subjects.


You'll learn about innovations in education, from digital technologies to forest schools (thanks to a purpose-built environmental classroom at our botanical gardens).


We offer a diverse range of routes into teaching. At undergraduate level, we offer several degrees with an additional qualification for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We have strong partnerships for initial teacher training and offer PGCE programmes at postgraduate level.


We have excellent links with more than 600 educational institutions across the UK. This means that our courses all come with fantastic opportunities to put your learning into practice in a place that suits your interests and specialisms, giving you the kind of practical experience that future employers value.

On many of our education degrees, you can opt to study for accredited Forest School certification. This prepares you to work with children outdoors, taking into account a range of additional needs and giving you a valuable extra qualification.
