Hull pioneered this exciting area of study more than 30 years ago and has an established reputation as one of the UK's leading criminology centres. Criminology sits in the School of Criminology, Sociology and Policing, which is part of the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education.


Our strong links with local, regional and national criminal justice agencies offer fantastic openings for work experience, work placements and job opportunities.

Foundation year

Gives you the skills and knowledge for entry on to a degree if you don’t quite meet the academic entry requirements.

Study abroad

We have partnerships with universities across the globe. Depending on your course, you can study for one trimester, or a full year, in another country.

Industrial placement

Work in industry as part of your degree. Depending on your course, you can spend part of your degree on placement. See your course page for specific details.

Integrated Masters

Some courses combine undergraduate and postgraduate study. The integrated Masters year is an extra year after your standard degree.

You'll have access to a purpose built Crime Scene facility, with flexible spaces providing realistic settings. There are also breakout and write-up spaces to collaborate outside of the crime scene scenario rooms.

Through placements, work experience and a diverse course of study and research, you’ll gather the key skills that are in demand across a wide range of careers.

You'll have the opportunity for a placement with Humberside Police over a semester – working with areas like CSI, the Special Branch Ports Unit, community policing, cyber crime and the custody suite. You’ll visit crime scenes, observe interviews and collect evidence.

From there, you career could take you to the police, the prison and probation services, the legal professions, social work, Civil Service research and non-governmental organisations such as Amnesty International and Greenpeace.

With over 30 years of experience, the Centre for Criminology and Criminal Justice provides world-class research that informs and responds to local, national and international needs. Areas of research range from histories of crime and punishment to surveillance, victimisation and modern day slavery.

Police Placements

Criminology students have the opportunity to take part in a work placement where you experence the nature and range of work undertaken by the police and other criminal justice agencies.
