Biological Science courses

Biological science is part of the Department of Biological and Marine Sciences, which sits within the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Your job will be vital: studying, understanding, protecting the rich biodiversity of our planet. So you need a degree that lives up to that. And you learn from the best: a close-knit team of world-leading researchers and award-winning academics.

All our undergraduate courses include real-life, hands-on experience that employers look for.

Whether that’s learning professional lab skills and developing your data analysis techniques. Or training to be a PADI-certified scuba diver and carrying out fieldwork in the UK and overseas.

We’re constantly reviewing our optional modules. So everything you learn reflects the cutting edge of the subject and the latest research by our staff.

Foundation year

Gives you the skills and knowledge for entry on to a degree if you don’t quite meet the academic entry requirements.

Study abroad

We have partnerships with universities across the globe. Depending on your course, you can study for one trimester, or a full year, in another country.

Industrial placement

Work in industry as part of your degree. Depending on your course, you can spend part of your degree on placement. See your course page for specific details.

Integrated Masters

Some courses combine undergraduate and postgraduate study. The integrated Masters year is an extra year after your standard degree.

  • Biology

Gain professional lab skills, get to grips with everything from genes to ecosystems, learn in the field on an overseas work experience trip … This is truly a hands-on biology degree.

  • Environmental Science

Now more than ever, we need scientists who understand the forces shaping our planet. That's where you come in. Choose this degree, and from day one you'll tackle real problems, find real solutions and start making a real difference to the world.

  • Marine Biology

The North Sea + The Deep + PADI-certified scuba dive training + field trips to locations like Brazil and Egypt + world-leading researchers = the perfect place to study marine biology.

  • Zoology

Want to understand animals better? And learn how to better protect them? You're in the right place. Explore all aspects of animal life, from a subcellular level to entire ecosystems. Then focus on a species that fascinates you, and a specialist area that could become your career.
