Summary

Vicky's expertise covers the advanced thermal/thermochemical treatments (mainly pyrolysis and gasification) of lignocellulosic biomass residues, fossil fuels, waste and their blends as well as design of thermochemical reactors for bioenergy and biomaterials (chars) production. She received her PhD in 2009 from Chem. Engineering Dept. of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Greece for the design of a mobile 5KWth fluidized bed (FB) gasifier for syngas-energy production from lignocellulosic biomass residues

(woody agroindustrial biomass waste ) in collaboration with industry (Philipoppoulos Energy Technical S.A., Greece). She subsequently received a Research Excellence Award (2010) to continue her research work at AUTh on co-pyrolysis and co-gasification of biodiesel industry waste/lignocellulosic residues and mixtures for syngas production, too.

In 2011 received a pan-hellenic award (scholarship) from IKY (National Funding Scholarships Association, Greece) for assessing pyrolysis and gasification characteristics of natural biopolymers presenting on lignocellulosic biomass waste and their mixtures. As a result of her exceptional achievements at national level, she was recognized as being one among the 79 best researchers of AUTh of the academic year of 2010-11, and honored by the Secretary of the Hellenic Ministry of Higher Education and Religious Affairs in a special ceremony 'AUTh University Excellence' on 21/9/2011. In 2012 she was offered an Research Associate position in Chem. Engineering Dept. at Imperial College (ICL), London where she established an advanced thermal treatment reactor (spouted bed gasifier for coal/woody biomass gasification) and tested solid conventional and alternative fuels under pyrolysis and gasification conditions as well as dealt with gaseous emissions control. From January 2014, she is a lecturer in Chem.Engineering discipline at the School of Engineering and Computer Science (SoECS), University of Hull (UoH) and she is research active as the PI of the B3 (Biomass/Waste-Bioenergy-Biochars) Challenge Group of PG students and researchers. From February 2019 she serves the role of Director of Research in Chemical Engineering. During the last 15 years Vicky has participated as either Co-I or PI in 17 research projects in the field of Biomass/Waste - Bioenergy- Biochars the majority of which were funded by the European Commission, from Greek public organizations (such as the General Secretariat of Research and Technology, Greek Ministries of Higher Education and Ministry of Development) and other funding bodies abroad such as EPSRC, HEFCE, British Council supported also by some private organizations in UK and abroad.

2019 - 2019

Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass waste for enhanced thermochemical decomposition for bioenergy production. by H.A. Alabdrabalameer, M.J. Taylor and V.Skoulou* The pre-treatment of woody and herbaceous lignocellulosic biomass waste has been explored to enhance its properties as a solid fuel source and control the inherent parameters such as moisture and ash content (inorganic residues that remain after combustion), as well as oxygen content, low calorific value, high volatilIly and low bulk density. Various chemical and physicochemical methods of leaching such as; hotplate, microwave and mechano-acoustic technologies have been used to combat the issues mentioned above, as well as determining an optimum substrate particle size via milling techniques. Facilitating pre-treatments under mild conditions have been found to not only be beneficial in the reduction of inorganic components such as P, S, Na, K and Ca (as determined by ICP-OES). They have been found to cause no detrimental effect to the complex organic matrix, where lignin and hemicellulose content of the substrate when measured by FTIR. Pre-treatment studies have been found to reduce the overall cellulosic crystallinity (calculated by Segal’s equation in PXRD) which is beneficial for thermochemical upgrading when using pyrolysis and gasification. Thermochemical studies have been conducted via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under N2 at varying temperatures to model pyrolysis conditions to calculate the biomass reactivity and heating value. It has been found that microwave based leaching is the most effective at reducing inorganic species and therefore lowering the ash content while maintaining the lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose content, as determined by ultimate analysis.

Conference Presentation: CO2 Integration in High Temperature Steam Gasification (HTSG) of Solid Fuels (lignocellulosic biomass) and Blends with Waste (Plastic)

2016 - 2016

CO2 integration in high temperature steam gasification (HTSG) of solid fuels and blends with waste Skoulou, V.* , Kantarelis, E., Yang, W. Aim of the present work is to investigate the viability of modifying the high temperature steam gasification process by adding CO2 in an attempt to tailor value added gas suitable for the energy - chemicals production industry. Such an integrated process investigates the concepts of high temperature steam gasification (HTSG) with aspects from steam gasification under a rich in CO2 atmosphere(CO2HTSG). The present study aimed at investigating the beneficial or detrimental effect of modifying the existing HTSG atmosphere by partially recycling CO2 in lab scale and ideally emerging from a conventional CO2 production process. The effect of the process parameters on the producer gas quality, char and tar yields when gasified non-food woody biomass (WB) of forest origin, swedish coal (SC) and pre-treated plastic waste (PW) studied, as well as their weak blends. Results of the present study indicated synergies when materials of lignocellulosic origin with coal are co-gasified under high temperature/steam conditions, while the modified with CO2 steam gasification environment and at elevated temperature did affect also the quality of the producer gas. This effect depends on the feeding properties and steam gasification conditions, It seems that gasification at elevated temperature with steam-carbon-dioxide decreased the reactivity of chars however blending with biomass at low percentages maximized the H2 and CO2 production.
