Summary

Barnaby teaches and researches American visual culture with a specialism in the history of photography.

His monograph, Watching the Red Dawn: The American Avant-Garde and the Soviet Union, was published by Manchester University Press in 2016.

Barnaby has recently written on American documentary photography of the early 1930s, enabled by a postdoctoral travel grant from the Terra Foundation. He has begun a new project on the racial politics of radical photography, funded by a British Academy Small Grant.
