School of Life Sciences Research

Research within the School of Life Sciences falls within four main groups which reflect the interests and expertise of our world-leading expert staff.

Exercise, Health and Sports Psychology

Research expertise focuses on the monitoring and evaluation of elite sports performance, exercise epidemiology and meta-analysis, and clinical exercise interventions.

Our cross-disciplinary approach combines cardiopulmonary exercise testing, training intervention and the measurement of immune, oxidative and inflammatory stress responses in both health and disease.

Studies encompass environmental and therapeutic stressors, such as hypoxia, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and heat stress.

Sports psychology examines psychological interventions among athletes (stress, coping, emotions, and morality) and coaches in addition to the social-pedagogical complexities of coaching practice.

Chronic Disease (Cancer, Cardiovascular, Wounds)

Chronic diseases and ageing are a major focus area. Research spans biological mechanism, through translational models, clinical studies and intervention.

Cancer research focuses on hypoxia, modulating the tumour microenvironment, biomarker identification, clinical oncology, tumour immunology, and cancer diagnostics.

Cardiovascular research addresses cardiac dysfunction, platelet biology and intervention.

The advanced wound care grouping is interested in chronic wound pathology, wound microbiology, translational models and novel treatment methods.

Our research closely integrates with NHS partners and a number of our research groups are based in the Daisy Research Laboratories at Castle Hill Hospital.

Psychology, Wellbeing and Mental Health

This theme has strengths in cognition and neuroscience, social and developmental psychology, and mental health and wellbeing.

We aim to be recognized for internationally leading empirical research and clinical/health/applied research that addresses both local and global priorities, including mental health, obesity and other lifestyle issues.

This theme has wide links to local organisations, public representatives, charities, artists, clinicians and industry and is part of the White Rose Consortium. It benefits from Hull’s diverse local environment and engages widely within the region.

Health Technologies (Microfluidics, Theranostics, Biomechanics & PET Imaging)

Biomedical microfluidic facilities allow us to develop bespoke miniature devices to maintain and 'interrogate' human tissue biopsies from healthy and diseased tissue.

Links with clinicians are allowing us to develop customised treatment to patients with malignant diseases.

The Health and Human Performance Laboratory combines sports rehabilitation with performance and movement analysis.

The PET (Positron Emission Tomography) Research Centre focuses on the development and validation of novel radionuclide imaging agents for use in oncology and cardiology.

Theranostic approaches are being used to develop specific, individualised therapies, for simultaneous diagnostic imaging and drug delivery.
