About the course
This programme provides the educational framework for students to work as an assistant practitioner in a range of healthcare settings.
Assistant practitioners assess, treat and care for patients in specific circumstances. They carry out tasks delegated by registered health professionals and are also accountable for certain tasks themselves.
An apprenticeship is a job with an accompanying skills development programme designed by employers in the sector.
It allows the apprentice to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience required for their immediate job and future career.
These are acquired through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practice and embed new skills in a real work context.
On completion of the programme, an apprentice will be able to undertake the full range of duties, in the range of circumstances appropriate to the job, confidently and competently to NHS standards.
Apprentices will be required to demonstrate that they have met the standard of the care certificate by the end of stage 1. This is an employer responsibility.
There is also a periopertative pathway for operating theatre staff working in support roles. Students must successfully complete level 5 of the generic pathway. On completion of the programme, students are awarded the same qualification as the generic pathway (Higher Apprenticeship Assistant Practitioner (Health)).

There are no specific qualifications required for entry to this apprenticeship. However, applicants will need to be able to provide evidence that they are able to meet the academic requirements of the programme.
Applicants to this apprenticeship will be from different age groups, with differing backgrounds and experience.
Whilst direct entry is possible it is very likely that applicants will have undertaken an advanced apprenticeship in a healthcare occupation or have comparable experience and/or qualifications.
- be currently employed in a health or social care setting and have the support of their employer
- be flexible as there may be a requirement to work shifts
- possess literacy and numeracy skills at level 2 or equivalent
- be able to provide evidence of previous study
- have a named practice supporter for the duration of the programme
- have a written recommendation from their employer

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, students will be awarded a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care (Associate Practioner).
They will be able to work as an assistant practitioner in a range of healthcare settings and undertake the full range of duties appropriate to the job, confidently and competently to NHS standards.
The course will be funded via the employing organisation.
The Government has pledged to create three million apprenticeships by 2020 with a special focus on higher and degree level apprenticeships offering education right up to Masters degree level.
From April 2017, large employers will pay a levy of 0.5% of their payroll bill to create a £3 billion funding to pay for these appprenticeships.
They will then be able to draw down the value of their contribution - plus a 10% top-up donation from the Government - in vouchers which can be used to pay for apprenticeships.
Vouchers can be spent on training, assessment and certification. Employers themselves pay the apprentice's wages.
Small employers will not be able to access levy funds initially. Up until April 2017 for an Apprenticeship Standard they will pay a third of the cost of apprenticeships with the other two-thirds (up to £18,000 per trainee) paid by the Government.
For Apprenticeship Frameworks, the government will fully fund 16-18 year old starting an apprenticeship and pay 50% for over 19's. Funding rates have not yet been set beyond April 2017.

Two years full-time (one day per week at university).
Students on the perioperative pathway:
Two years full-time.
The first year is delivered in blocks of teaching time.
The second year is one day per week at university.
