About the course

This new course for 2019 offers an opportunity for those looking to change their career and/or don’t quite meet the entry requirements for our professional health and social care degree programmes.

Delivered through evening taught classes (Tuesday, 6–9 pm) at the University of Hull campus and online, via our dedicated online learning platform, this programme is an easily-accessible and vocationally-relevant introduction to academic study.

It is aimed at those who would like to pursue careers as nurses, midwives, operating department practitioners, paramedics or social workers*, but who currently do not have the academic qualifications to apply directly for our healthcare degrees.

* GCSE Maths and English Language Grade 4 or C, or equivalent are required for those wishing to progress on to BA Social Work 

Study

This part-time evening programme is designed for people looking to progress onto professional programmes. You can remain in your job while studying. The course will also improve your knowledge, skills and employability, and help you to decide if further study is for you.

  • Introduction to Health and Social Care
  • Science for Health and Social Care
  • Learning for the Workplace
  • Numeracy in Health and Social Care Practice
  • Dementia – Responding Positively

Students are assessed through a variety of methods including written assignments, portfolios of evidence, examinations, presentations and demonstrations of practice skills.

There are no formal entry requirements. Applicants must be aged 18 and over.

Careers

This course is an approved entry route for our health degrees including BSc Nursing (Adult, Child, Mental Health, or Learning Disability), BSc Midwifery, BSc Paramedic Science, BSc Operating Department Practice and BA Social Work*. Students are required to make a full UCAS application for these programmes. All places are subject to the normal requirements for an acceptable personal statement, references, successful interview, medical and DBS.

Fees

The cost of the course for the September 2019 intake is £4,625. Applicants may be eligible for self-financing through a Student Loan from Student Finance England (conditions apply). Further details are available on application.

One year
