Psychology Facilities

Psychology students at Hull benefit from a wide variety of cutting-edge equipment in our research labs.

You’ll benefit from our blend of theory and practical teaching, and get hands-on with our facilities to enhance your learning.

From specialist features like our Brain Study Laboratory to cosy areas to collaborate with other students, plus our contemporary library and study spaces, our single campus is packed with facilities to help you excel in your degree. Take a look at our highlights or step onto campus on our Virtual Tour.

Tracking the brain

You’ll learn how to measure brain activity using an electroencephalography (EEG) machine as well as functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a non-invasive method of measuring in vivo (in situ) brain activity. We are also working with nearby Hull Royal Infirmary to use MRI scanning.

Infant development

Our ‘baby lab’ is fitted with specialist equipment to help you understand the fascinating world of infant development.

TMS and TDCS

We have dedicated laboratories for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) which are used to identify the contribution of brain areas to cognitive processes, and also to treat patients with brain injuries or psychiatric conditions.

TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain while tDCS delivers a low intensity electrical current to a specific area of the brain.

Facilities include: Neuroconn DC Stimulator (x3) (tDCS system) - Soterix Medical MxN-9 HD-tES Stimulator (High Definition tDCS system) - Magstim Rapid TMS system - Magstim Rapid 2 TMS system - Neuronavigation System

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (FNIRS)

This system allows us to continuously measure brain activity. It is a non-invasive imaging technique that is more flexible than MRI.

Facilities include: NIRScout88 incl TMS-compatible fibres (fNIRS system with 8 sources and 8 detectors)

Eye-tracking lab

All eyes and ears

Our eye-tracking laboratory allows you to study areas of cognitive psychology such as attention and visual perception. Plus, you’ll have access to an audiometric lab for studying human responses to sounds, including noise, speech and music.

Learning journey

You’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in using this equipment under expert guidance as a research assistant, then for your final-year dissertation project you’ll gain scientific insights into how these methods further our understanding of the human mind.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

We have the opportunity to obtain high resolution anatomical scans for research purposes via a cooperation agreement with the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies can be realized via existing links with the York Neuroimaging Centre.

Encephalography (EEG)

Students use EEG, which measures electrical activity generated by the brain, to learn more about cognitive processes such as sensory perception, selective attention and object recognition.

Facilities include: Brainvision actiCAP 64 channel EEG system (active electrodes) - Brainvision Analyzer software - BioSemi EEG system

Real life impact

In the lab at our Centre for Health and Clinical Neuroscience we can assess outpatients, such as those suffering from cognitive impairment or the onset of dementia, as well as patients with eating disorders or addiction.

The Centre includes an observation suite where students can watch interviews, via camera or a two-way mirror, as well as nutrition and biometric assessment equipment. We also have equipment to monitor blood pressure, heart rate and other indicators of stress.

Psychology Collaboration Space

Space for you

As well as specialist labs and equipment, you will have access to communal areas, where you can meet fellow students and unwind. Our modern, spacious collaborative area is handily located near the main Psychology lecture theatres and academics. Decked out with comfortable sofas, it’s a place where you can work on your assignments with your fellow students or catch up after lectures.

The Centre for Health and Clinical Neuroscience

This is the doorway through which people beyond the University access us for our research and clinical expertise. We offer psychological assessments for a wide range of conditions, including problems related to obesity and eating disorders, and dementia.

Facilities include an observation suite where students can watch interviews, via camera or a two-way mirror, as well as nutrition and biometric assessment equipment to accurately measure weight, height and adiposity. We also have equipment to monitor blood pressure, heart rate and other indices of stress.

Audio Laboratory

Our audio laboratory is equipped with a sound-attenuating audiometric test booth and associated hardware. It is used to study responses to sounds, including noise, speech and music.
