Department of Languages and Philosophy

About the department

You don't just become fluent in another language at Hull - you immerse yourself in the culture of the people who speak it. The University of Hull has been at the forefront of language learning for more than 50 years.

Philosophy has been taught at Hull since we first opened our doors in 1927. Thanks to the expertise of research-active teaching staff, we enable students to shape their own skills in analytical thinking and critical debate, as well as developing intellectual integrity.

In our new Applied Languages course, students gain intercultural communication skills, critical thinking, and transferrable skills such as networking, time management and problem solving.

Studying philosophy at Hull means doing philosophy: engaging with current issues and emerging philosophical challenges. This helps develop and utilise the skills that only a training in philosophy can provide.

Research in the Department of Languages and Philosophy

Research in the Department of Modern Languages and Philosophy focuses on two major themes.

The first centres on the role of education and teaching from a global perspective. Our research explores the philosophy of education and education issues in cross-cultural contexts.

The second is related to identity and the politics of identity. Our researchers explore this theme from several perspectives. These range from investigating representations and notions of identity in popular culture, art and politics as well as in hybrid or cross-cultural contexts.
