About the department

We are passionate about education and helping to develop the next generation of engineering professionals. We combine cutting-edge research, industrial links and excellent facilities to deliver industry-accredited undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.

Hull has an excellent reputation for teaching engineering. We are ranked third in the UK for overall student satisfaction in Mechanical Engineering in the National Student Survey 2020. The department has invested in state-of-the-art facilities such as the FabLab and Robotics Lab to enhance its teaching and learning experience.

Ideally positioned at the heart of the UK’s burgeoning ‘Energy Estuary’, we have links with major engineering employers in the region. These relationships inform our teaching and provide opportunities for our students.

Based within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, our academics collaborate with colleagues across the university and industry.

Research in the Department of Engineering

Our research is aimed at addressing two of the most important challenges facing the world today: firstly, maintaining energy security whilst reducing environmental impact; and, secondly, improving the healthcare of an increasing, and often aging, population whilst satisfying growing patient expectations.

Innovations in engineering and technology – underpinned by the development of new materials, processes and design methodologies – are the only ways these challenges will be met.

We are tackling the first through our research into more efficient energy utilisation; the development and improved operation of renewable energy systems; and the creation of large-scale energy storage techniques.

Our biomedical engineering research works, firstly, to better understand the way in which the human body functions and then to develop new medical devices that assist in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disease – whilst improving efficiency in the delivery of that care.

Research strengths

Renewable Energy Technologies and Energy Storage

By improving understanding of renewable energy devices and the wider energy system, our research is supporting more efficient utilisation of renewable energy resources, resulting in a lower cost to users and reduced environmental impact.

The drive to reduce carbon emissions worldwide – and the UK’s commitment to net zero – requires a rapid adoption of renewable energy technologies for power generation and action to reduce energy usage. In addition, the intermittent nature of some renewable energy technologies means that large-scale energy storage is needed to maintain supply.

Our research aims to

  • improve the performance and reduce the cost of marine renewable energy (offshore wind, wave and tidal);
  • establish new technologies for efficient large-scale energy storage;
  • and introduce innovative techniques to manage heat and air flow in the built environment to reduce energy use.

Innovations in this field can make a significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions in the UK and worldwide.

We’re investigating innovations in the design, manufacture, control and integration of wind, wave and tidal devices to enable them to be used more widely in harsher environments – where maintenance can be very challenging. In addition, our research in improving understanding of the heating and cooling of buildings is allowing users to have a conformable, comfortable, healthy working environment while minimising, or eliminating, the need for energy supply.

We’re working with charity Greenpower Education Trust, which gets young people enthusiastic about science and engineering by challenging them to design, build and race an electric car. Experts Test COVID-19 Face Masks

We led the testing process of COVID-19 face masks before they were distributed to frontline NHS staff in the Humber region. Timothy Dunstan, an electron microscopist, led the testing on a batch of the masks to ensure they met the standard required for use by NHS staff. Since presenting their findings, the face masks have been rolled out to local NHS hospitals.
