Department of Chemistry

Ever since we were founded almost 100 years ago we’ve been making the world a better place.

Our chemists produced the molecules that started the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen revolution. We developed the first biodegradable plastics too. And today, we're creating new medical imaging technologies, smart inks and the next generation of environmentally friendly plastics.

We're at the heart of one of the largest chemical industry clusters in the UK. We work closely with many of these companies to create innovative solutions to the challenges that they face.

Our focus is directly channelled into the high-quality teaching and practical experience we deliver for our students. As a result, we train chemists who are ready to work in industries ranging from foods to pharmaceuticals – and are prepared for careers in sectors such as research, education and management.

Our academics and students, come together to form a vibrant research and teaching environment. Together we are delivering more world changing research through our focus on chemistry for sustainability, smart materials, and health.

Research in the Department of Chemistry

Our chemistry for health theme is developing imaging/theranostic agents, drug/agent delivery systems, antimicrobials and anti-cancer agents, as well as clinical diagnostics.

Chemistry for sustainability connects to the core University commitment to be carbon neutral by 2027. Chemistry contributes to this through research on developing plastics that are designed to fit within a circular economy, as well as environmental monitoring and sustainable energy sources.

Chemistry for smart materials works across the G. W. Gray Centre for Advanced Materials. Founded in 2016 this centre provides critical mass for researchers across our Chemistry, Physics and Engineering departments.

The centre’s name commemorates the crucial contribution that University of Hull Professor George Gray made to the development of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology. Our researchers continue to build on this leading reputation in liquid crystal research and are delivering outstanding track record in colloidal science and nanomaterials.

Research in Chemistry is organised into three areas, which map onto the main research areas of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Research strengths

Chemistry for Health

Our work in this field is relevant to many industries including food, agrochemical, oilfield chemical, and pharmaceutical. Our research covers catalysis, photonic/electronic materials, biomaterials, nanomaterials, energy materials, structure-property relationships, colloids, polymers, composites and liquid crystals.

Chemistry is at the heart of collaborative research to create smart materials with a range of properties for applications in modern technologies. Through our chemistry for smart materials research theme we are discovering the limits of stability and reactivity for small molecules. Our team is also exploring the use of non-toxic biosourced microcapsules to replace petroleum-based chemicals and materials.

    Explore our state-of-the-art facilities

    Our state-of-the-art facilities include dedicated teaching labs including a Physical Chemistry teaching lab, an Analytical Chemistry teaching lab and Synthetic Chemistry teaching labs.

    You’ll also have plenty of access to research labs and facilities during final year projects. Including mass spectrometry, NMR, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction and lab-on-a-chip fabrication.
