We asked some of our students who came to us via the Clearing process to offer their top tips to help make your journey as smooth as possible. Here’s what they had to say…

Tip 01: To begin with, it’s so important that you put your happiness as your number one priority!
It’s a disappointing feeling not to be able to go to the universities you put as your firm and insurance choice, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for somewhere that isn’t right for you. There will be a university that you’re happy with, so make sure you choose that one.

Tip 02: Next up, be proactive.
Make a list of the things that are important to you when looking at universities. Think about the type of campus that will suit you - is a city-based campus something you’re looking for? Or would you prefer to have everything you need right there without any need to leave campus? Accommodation is also an important part to university. Is it an en-suite you’re after, or are you looking for somewhere that has social spaces? Your price range will also need to be factored into this – make sure to find what you want within your budget.

Tip 03: It’s also important to find out as much as you can about the course and the department itself.
Ask why that particular course is unique at that university compared to every other. As much as you will be finding universities that are willing to offer you a place, they will want to sell their university to you too. You need a list of criteria that you will be happy with.

Tip 04: Take your time.
Your clearing process doesn’t have to start as soon as you receive your results. You can take a couple of days (and deep breaths) before you starting contacting universities. Look around the city properly and get a feel for the city you might be spending the next few years in.

Tip 05: Please don’t panic!
(Easier said than done...)
It may sound clichéd but everything happens for a reason. Everything will work out and the university you choose will be able to offer you memories, experiences and valuable lessons (including those taught in the lecture theatres) that will stay with you for life.
