What you'll study

The course commences with a broad-based engineering education, emphasising the application of mechanical engineering.

Your studies will include a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, computer laboratory work and workshop practicals. The study of manufacturing methods, commercial management and production management – along with the mathematical knowledge to underpin the mechanical engineering theories you will learn – ensures that your education is comprehensive and multidisciplinary.

Your studies will be complemented by a specialist ‘design-and-make’ module, which utilises our machine shops – an important professional requirement.

All BEng and MEng Mechanical Engineering programmes are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). BEng programmes fully meet the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meet the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. MEng programmes fully meet the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

In the final year of the BEng course, you will undertake a major project which gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills as an engineer. You will develop a deeper knowledge of mechanical engineering in line with your particular interests.

More about this course

Mechanical Engineering is the largest and most popular area of engineering among students and has a long, successful history at Hull. Hull was rated among the top three northern universities for student satisfaction with mechanical engineering courses in the Complete University Guide 2015. During your studies you will gain a broad base of knowledge, along with innovative problem-solving skills, which can be applied to a range of mechanical engineering-related industries.

Combine this with the opportunity to boost your employability by spending your penultimate year either applying the theory learned in previous years to real life projects on industrial placement, or by studying at one of our partner institutions in Europe, Asia, North America or Australia. The option of a Masters year is available for those who aspire to the highest level and wish to study at a more advanced level. A Foundation year is ideal if you do not have the qualifications and experience to enter the degree course directly.

Hull has a genuine multidisciplinary engineering capability within the school, where skills across the various branches are taught by industry professionals and practising engineers, most of whom are Chartered Engineers.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level.

Fees and funding

Fees may be subject to permitted inflationary increases in future years. 

UK and EU students can take out a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of their course, and UK students can take out a maintenance loan of up to £8,700 to cover living costs.

Substantial discounts are available for International students.

Future Prospects

Due to a national shortage of engineers and technologists, our graduates enjoy excellent career prospects with many securing challenging and rewarding positions in the UK, throughout Europe and in the USA.

The skills you learn from studying engineering – your mathematical abilities, problem-solving skills, ability to understand innovative concepts and experience of working in teams gained through group projects – are in high demand across all areas of engineering, and this is reflected in the significant pay rises of Chartered Engineers that continue to outstrip the cost of living.

Your career prospects are enhanced by our close collaboration with industry to ensure our course meets the requirements of potential employers. This is evidenced in the types of jobs our graduates go on to; many work as science, engineering or technology professionals with organisations such as BAE Systems, Jaguar, Land Rover, British Energy, The Royal Navy, Williams F1 and Rolls Royce.

Engineering graduates are also prominent within senior management positions. The Engineering Council's recent survey revealed that an increasing number of chairmen, chief executives and managing directors are professional engineers.

Research is another career avenue for our graduates. Many students have also stayed on for higher degrees both at Masters and PhD level.
