Summary

Lisa is a Reader in Education and is the Director of Research in the School of Education. Her research and teaching expertise focus on educational and social inequalities, particularly those pertaining to issues of social class and socio-economic disadvantage as well as climate injustice. Lisa is interested in participatory, collaborative and creative approaches to research.

Lisa is the PI on the Youth-led adaptation for climate change challenges in Vietnam: social action, intergenerational and intercultural learning project funded by the British Academy’s Youth Futures Programme, supported under the UK Government's Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The project is a collaboration with the University of Hull’s Energy and Environment Institute and is partnered with CRES, Vietnam National University and Newcastle University [ https://www.hull.ac.uk/work-with-us/research/case-studies/youth-led-adaptation-for-climate-change]. The project looks to use participatory and collaborative approaches to support youth in Vietnam to research culturally diverse, traditional practices and indigenous knowledges that offer important insights into mitigating against the challenges of climate change. Youth will then be supported to engage in creative forms of knowledge exchange to ensure the important learning derived by youth benefits the communities from which it originates whilst also offering a source of learning beyond those communities.

Lisa is also the academic lead on the Just Like Our Lives [https://www.hull.ac.uk/work-with-us/research/case-studies/just-like-our-lives] project working to support the educational experiences of young people who are looked after. The project has been very successful in foregrounding the voices of young people through its co-production approach including the creation of an animated film that been widely used in training and public outreach across a range of educational settings and social/children’s services. The film was shortlisted for a range of prestigious national and international film festivals and awards including the World Health Organization’s Health for All Film Festival (from 1265 entries from 119 countries) and the prestigious Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Research in Film Awards (see the film at https://youtu.be/Al3vtGKcqhg).

Along with her colleague Dr Martin Nickson and their partner the Borashabaa Refugee Community Organisation, Lisa has also received funding from the Wellcome Trust funded, British Science Association initiative - the 'Ideas Fund' - an inspiring and innovative pilot, which changes the relationship between communities and researchers to work in partnership around mental wellbeing (details of the scheme and projects can be found at https://www.hull.ac.uk/work-with-us/more/media-centre/news/2021/british-science-association-announces-research-funding-for-12-hull-community-projects).

Lisa is also the CI on INSECURE - Capturing Intergenerational Narratives of Coastal Change (https://www.hull.ac.uk/work-with-us/research/institutes/energy-and-environment-institute/our-work/insecure-%E2%80%93-capturing-intergenerational-narratives-of-coastal-change). The project's film featuring the stories collected from youth and community members was a finalist in the AHRC's Research in Film Award (RIFA) 'climate change' category 2021.

Lisa joined the University of Hull in 2011 coming from the University of Manchester where she both worked as a researcher for eight years and also completed her PhD focused on the class identity of novice teachers.

Lisa currently teaches as follows:

Module Leader - International and Intercultural Perspectives in Education (P/G - Level 7)

Module Leader - Social Justice and Social Change (U/G - Level 4)

Module Leader - Representations and Realities: The Media, Diversity and Difference (U/G - Level 5)
