Summary

Darren is currently Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education, having joined the University in 2003 and progressed through roles such as Head of School, Associate Principal and Associate Dean. Darren is passionate for the use of technology in overcoming barriers to learning in Higher Education and other contexts.

Darren's work in the educational technologies area has moved from technologies designed to generate greater engagement with learning content (The Wild Thing; PAM-PAM; Augmented lectures etc.), through environments designed to facilitate different types of learning for students (The Euroversity project), to a focus on enabling individuals to develop the literacies they need to utilise technology and technology platforms in ways to strengthen their lifelong approaches to learning (The DETECT project, https://www.detectproject.eu/).

In addition to his work in the educational technology area Darren's has a disciplinary focus on research linked to information security, privacy and digital communications (primarily linked to the use of platforms e.g. social media, to engage users)

He has supervised several postgraduate students through to successful completion of studies at the University of Hull.

Darren has also been involved in a number of externally funded innovation projects focused around the innovative use of information technologies and digital media to support business services and has more than 45 published articles.

Darren was responsible for the initial authorship of Games Design provision at the University of Hull and has taught within the Screen area across modules linked to web design through to Games Art and Development for the past 20 years.
