Faculty of Science and Engineering Research

The Faculty of Science and Engineering fosters an environment which facilitates fundamental and applied research that crosses traditional discipline divides, delivers real impact and changes lives.

From understanding how the Earth is responding to climate change to developing miniaturised platforms for chemical synthesis, clinical diagnostics and environmental analysis, our diverse and collaborative research addresses real-world problems.

We are proud of our close links with industry and businesses. Our award-winning research into surfactants and colloids - developing formulations and understanding the basic science of emulsions and soft materials - is just one of many successful industrial collaborations.
The faculty received outstanding results in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), underpinning much of the University's performance across the board.

In the area of Allied Health - led by the Faculty of Science and Engineering - 87% of our submitted research earned a three- or four-star rating.

We also enjoyed superb results in geography, environment, chemistry and engineering, where more than 75% of our research rated at three stars or higher.

The REF results underlined our reputation for conducting research that matters. That changes lives.

Our geography and environmental studies submission was ranked third for impact among universities in the UK (and joint first in England). Computer science were placed joint fifth for impact nationally, with 80% of submitted research impact hitting the four-star 'world leading' benchmark.

The faculty's vibrant research environment houses state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities. But it also depends on the energy and talents of our postgraduate research students, who power this engine room of innovative, cutting-edge research.
