Our halls are in the leafy, laid-back ‘student village’ of Cottingham. It might appear to be a sleepy community, but the picturesque setting disguises a thriving student area – especially popular among first years exploring their new surroundings. Cottingham makes the perfect base for acclimatising to student life: there are decent-sized supermarkets, cashpoints, a collection of cafes and coffee bars, restaurants and takeaways, interesting independent shops ... and of course, a selection of good pubs.

Top three things to do in Cottingham

  1. The Lawns Centre – the Lawns Centre is the catering and social hub of our accommodation and features an impressive array of facilities including a gym, café, licensed bar, dining hall and cinema room. It has everything you could need during your time with us and is the ideal place to meet friends, grab a bite to eat or catch an event.
  2. Springboard Festival – this free live music festival is an annual event in the village, showcasing dozens of talented local acts in genres from thrash metal to indie-pop and folk. The next festival will take place from the 25–27 May 2018.
  3. Nightlife – Cottingham has a decent range of pubs, from the modern Cross Keys and traditional Fair Maid to the lively Tiger Inn and the sporty Hallgate Tavern, located among the boho restaurants and shops in the village centre.

Food, glorious food!

Most of The Lawns halls are semi-catered, so you’ll get a freshly prepared home-cooked meal each day. Nicholson Hall and the Lawns Bungalows are self-catered – but residents can still 'buy in' to the evening meal for around £4. Living in semi-catered halls can make budgeting easier – since some of your meals are included in the accommodation fee. Meal times are also brilliant for meeting up with friends and socialising.

Our varied menus cater for a range of dietary requirements. We're also happy to arrange late evening meals – or for you to spend your meal allowance at the cafes on campus instead.

Sample menu

Monday: Scotch broth; classic Monterey jack beef burger; lamb rogan josh with rice and naan bread; hot vegetable quiche, French fries, green beans, baked beans; and chocolate sponge.

Tuesday: woodland mushroom soup; beef or vegetable lasagne and garlic bread; chicken cordon bleu, herby diced potatoes, garden peas, sweetcorn; and apple crumble.

Wednesday: roasted tomato soup; roast beef and Yorkshire pudding; fisherman’s pie; goat's cheese and rocket pizza; roast potatoes, buttered spinach, baby carrots; and spotted dick.

The welfare and care of our students is our prime concern. We have a dedicated team of pastoral staff available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week who will offer practical and emotional support whenever you need it.

Disability access

We work with Disabled Go so you can make an informed choice about our accommodation's disability features. Blue badge holders can apply for a parking permit to park on campus.
