To celebrate the Rt Hon Alan Johnson (DUniv, 2018) becoming Chancellor of the University of Hull in July 2023, we are delighted to announce the newly re-branded Chancellor’s Circle (previously the Vice-Chancellor’s Circle).
To coincide with the relaunch of the group, the main focus for donations will be the Chancellor’s Scholarships. Each year ten exceptional students will be awarded monetary support, with applicants chosen via an expert panel. The merit-based programme encourages those with the potential to be excellent undergraduate students, in and out of the classroom, to study at Hull, with 10 full-fee scholarships available per year to UK students across all subject areas. This is an important part of our plan to make Hull an attractive place for the leaders of tomorrow and to broaden our appeal to students from across the UK.
Alumni, supporters and friends are making a huge difference to our work, but sometimes it is difficult to fully understand just how far-reaching the legacy of your support can be. By joining the Chancellor’s Circle, you are turning potential into purpose. Circle champions have been using their networks to promote causes close to their hearts and to inspire others to support our work and join the Chancellor’s Circle. University of Hull students studying Politics and Legislative Studies are offered a unique twelve-month placement in Westminster. This enables them to work alongside an MP or a peer and apply the knowledge gained through their university work to the real world. This pipeline has opened many doors to students considering a career in politics. Hull graduates have become a familiar part of the Westminster landscape and have become affectionately known as the “Hull Mafia”.
Despite the success of the programme, there is a growing concern that the costs of the Westminster placement are proving to be prohibitive for some students. This has affected both participation in the scheme and enrolment and retention to the programme. More significantly it may have restricted opportunities for students from poorer backgrounds to enjoy the benefits of the placement year and increase their representation within Westminster.
In order to ensure that the internship programme remains accessible to all students, regardless of their financial situation, we want to be able to offer bursaries of £3,000 to ten students each year, helping them with day to day living costs associated with a Westminster placement. Your support will be essential to help make this happen

In 2021, 27% of students eligible for free school meals got a place at University. Compare this figure to the 66% of IntoUniversity alumni who got a place at university and you can clearly see the impact. With over 290 partner schools around the UK, and a new one opening in the Marfleet area, east Hull, in Autumn 2022, IntoUniversity are already making a big difference for students nationally.
Child poverty levels in Hull have been growing year on year to over 18,500 in 2019, and the new IntoUniversity centre aims to support disadvantaged young people from ages 7-19 in the local area with one-to-one mentoring, academic support, enrichment opportunities and employment support throughout their school journey, their first year at university, and beyond.

Whilst starting university can be an exciting experience, it can be particularly stressful for members of the LGBTQ+ community. In August 2021 we launched our Jeremy Round LGBTQ+ Scholarships, named in memory of University of Hull alumnus Jeremey Round. The scholarships are supported, and part-funded, by Jeremy Round’s former partner, Jeremy Trevathan who was inspired to support these scholarships as he himself encountered significant challenges as a gay student living in the 1970s.
Here at the University of Hull we want to make sure that our campus is a safe place where students are able to express themselves and feel comfortable to be exactly who they are without discrimination. We hope these scholarships help to remove some of the barriers members of the LGBTQ+ community might face when accessing higher education, and build on the University’s commitment to equality and inclusivity.

The Student Success Fund incorporates everything that helps students get the best out of their time here. It’s a holistic approach to student success, providing flexible funding to support a range of challenges relating to Student Hardship, Student Wellbeing and Mental Health. Additionally, contributions can be used to fund activities for students from low income backgrounds in areas that relate to building their careers, studying or working abroad or participating in sports – an activity which is positively related to reducing isolation and improving mental health.
Wellbeing and Mental Health Support
Mental health issues have more than trebled in recent years. Depression, financial worries and illness could all prevent a student from graduating, in addition to new challenges and demands that come from living through a pandemic, for example social isolation, health anxiety. The University is committed to supporting every student in need of mental health support; with funding from our alumni, in recent years we have offered suicide awareness and prevention training to staff, we launched an online digital platform, called Togetherall, for students, but right now our services are oversubscribed.

Student Hardship Fund
The Student Hardship Fund does exactly what it says, supports our students, through hardship and bursaries, ensuring that our students are in the best possible position to be the best that they can be and get the best possible experiences from their University experience. We want to support our students to participate in extra-curricular activities, ensuring that after graduation not only do they hold an excellent degree but they also have the relevant experiences they need gain employment in their chosen field to become the best graduates!

Only 24% of STEM graduates are Women and only 23% of core STEM workers are women. Organisations that embrace equality, diversity, and inclusion deliver better results, have more motivated staff, increased recognition and greater innovation, and that is why we need to increase gender equality in the STEM area.
It is vital that we encourage and support women to study STEM subjects to ensure that we are contributing to a healthier and more diverse dialogue in workplaces and communities across the country.
