Access to Science and Engineering Degrees

If you are interested in studying for a science or engineering degree and don't think you have the right background then the science foundation year has been designed with you in mind.

Who is it for?

The degrees have been designed for those:

• who have completed two years of A level study, or equivalent, but whose grades are not suitable for direct entry to the three-year BSc/BEng degrees
• with work experience in science or engineering
• with qualifications in subjects other than science, engineering or mathematics
• whose first language is not English and would benefit from an additional year of study in both English language and science
• returning to formal education after a significant break.

• is delivered at the University's Hull campus giving you a real university experience from day one
• will provide you with a solid base of scientific knowledge and study skills
• has built in progression to your chosen degree level course upon successful completion of the foundation year
• is taught by staff who understand the skills and knowledge required for your degree course
• provides students whose first language is not English, with the opportunity to improve both their science knowledge and improve their English language.

About the foundation year

The foundation year is made up of modules designed to provide you with the scientific knowledge and study skills you will need to be successful in your degree studies. It also aims to build your confidence, effectiveness and motivation through the module ‘Preparing for Learning at HE Level' which includes a variety of innovative personal and motivational activities alongside more traditional study skills.

Areas of study include some of the following:

• biology
• chemistry
• computing
• mathematics
• physics
• study skills
• English language (an option for international students).

Depending on the degree you choose, the individual modules will either be compulsory or optional. Modules are assessed in a variety of ways such as coursework, practical assignments, field work, group work, and examinations. Don't be put off by the thought of exams as study skills are available to help those who are unfamiliar with exams or who haven't sat an exam for a long time.
