MPhys Applied Physics

" I applied to Hull as my first choice particularly because of the excellent standards of teaching in Physics, and numerous research groups whose work I was interested in. For me, one of the best qualities of our department is that, although not as large as some, it has a uniquely positive and friendly atmosphere. With other students around you and our lecturers offering an open-door policy, there is always someone to give help when you need it. Hull itself is a very lively city, with pubs, clubs and restaurants for any taste, and student prices almost everywhere! Even staying on campus is a good night out, and with the surrounding life in the Newland area you are always spoilt for choice any night of the week! Our sports facilities are brilliant too; since joining university I have taken up jujitsu and capoeira. My course has been challenging, no doubt about it, but I have thoroughly enjoyed being here. Physics as a fundamental subject at degree level opens up so many doors for careers in almost anything - or even for a PhD! "

Open Days

Physics at Hull provides a stimulating and friendly environment to study for a three year BSc or a four year MPhys degree. Most of the courses are accredited by the Institute of Physics who commented on "the excellent transferable skills" of Hull physics graduates. The teaching is judged excellent by the Higher Education Funding Council, who noted the "high employability of all students" and how much students appreciate the well equipped laboratory facilities and contact with personal tutors.

The Physics department lies at the centre of the University's attractive green campus about two miles from the city centre of Hull. Modules are taught with an appropriate balance of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. The year groups are relatively small, up to 45 students, so that the learning environment is relaxed and interactive. Teaching is informed by the world-leading research of staff particularly in the areas of lasers, optoelectronics, nanoscience, chemical physics, solid state physics and thermodynamics. All undergraduate students get an opportunity to participate in research as part of their final year project. We offer a generous range of scholarships as well as means-tested bursaries

We offer BSc and MPhys degrees in the following subjects. Further information can be found from the links below or by downloading the undergraduate brochure or summary pamphlet. You can also request a brochure to be sent to you by post.
