VIOLACEAE

Viola

Viola riviniana

Common Dog-violet

Found only under the hedges of the fields to the east of Priory Road. Abundant there but not yet found within the city boundary.

Viola tricolor

Wild Pansy

Only two plants found. That in 02N, on the old railway sidings, is almost certainly the true V. tricolor. The plant found at the Victoria Dock development, 12E, occurred with the garden pansy and may have been a hybrid with V. arvense which was also growing nearby.

Viola arvensis

Field Pansy

The main occurrence seems to be on imported sandy soils. It is, however, native to the city and is extremely abundant on the light soil of my allotment garden in the east of the city (13L).
