The Plants of Hull : methods & limitations

The project is now in its second year and the data represent the fruits of two field seasons. Although I have tried to cover as much of the city as possible it has been impracticable to visit everywhere. The plants described in these pages must be regarded as a "minimum" list, undoubtedly others are present. New records will be added as they become available but I do not intend to add records prior to 1st January 1996.

Since most of the survey work was carried out in the summer months there will be some plants which are under-recorded or missed altogether. Ranunculus ficcaria is known to be common in the area but few leaves were found. The same will be true for many other Spring-flowering plants.

Identification
Although great care has been taken to validate records, there may be the occasional lapse. I am aware of certain weaknesses in my identification skills and have erred on the side of caution and not recorded plants I was unsure of - this have the biggest impact on Salix (Willows) and some of the grasses - particularly Agrostis.
