You may have wondered why there is such a miscellaneous collection of apparently unrelated material on my Web site. That is because I am a person of wide interests.I do not hold with giving intimate
details of one's life or one's CV to anyone on the Web who comes
and looks for it. Suffice it to say that I am a retired senior
academic, who did not quite make it to professor, who has worked and studied in
the Netherlands. I am a biochemist/microbiologist by training,
and have worked in the Microbiology departments of the Universities
of Groningen and Delft, and I have a number of good friends in
the Netherlands. Hence the fact that I can speak Dutch, and hence
the Dutch material on my Web
site.

Scientific Pedigree
Every scientist has a research pedigree, which he or she inherits from his or her supervisor, who in turn owes his or her training to an earlier supervisor. It is important to be able to testify to one's academic and research training background by knowing one's scientific line of descent. A good example of a collection of such scientific pedigrees in the field of chemistry is on John Andraos's web site. See also this link. You can see my pedigree here and that of certain of my own past PhD students. The pedigree goes back to Leopold Gmelin (1788-1853).
I am Editor of the World Journal
of Microbiology and Biotechnology, hence the links to that journal
and the other microbiological material on this site. I am also a devout Anglican, and hence there is
a lot on this site related to churches and theology. In particular
I maintain the Web site for Saint
Mary's Parish Church, Barton-on-Humber.
As both a microbiologist and
a consumer, I am interested in beer,
so there is a page on that topic, concentrating mainly on English,
Dutch and Belgian beers.
