Initial Population Sensitivity and Epochal Cycle of Four Generalised Game of Life Cellular Automata through Simulations

Abstract

Cellular Automata such as Conway's Game of Life continues to attract attention due to the complexity of the emergent spatial patterns it generates. Using extensive numerical simulation and statistical collection over many independent evolutionary trajectories in large scale model instantiations, we study four other related automata - Highlife, Pseudo-Life, 2x2 and Move - that have similar characteristics to the Conway system. We compare their sensitivities to different initial conditions. We find different evolutionary behaviours from initially random configurations, and different time epochs in their ability to sustain spatial complexity. We speculate on potential characteristic time-scales for different automata rules controlled by the particular finite sizes of the simulated systems.
