Coupled CFD and material properties from fire tests

for fire spread prediction in buildings

1994-1997, EPSRC GR/J71540/01

This research project involved developments in three distinct, but interrelated, topic areas : the development and evaluation of the Cranfield field modelling code, SOFIE - Simulation of Fires in Enclosures, in respect of the coupled treatment of buoyant flow and thermal radiation within ventilated compartments, including the introduction of a multi-block capability for local grid refinement; the development of a detailed model for surface flame spread, compatible with the general CFD flow field and heat transfer formulation and evaluated against experimental measurement; demonstration of the fully coupled capability of the code in the transient simulation of a representative room corner fire in which the walls participate in the growth of the fire.

This project is reported in the PhD thesis of Mike Lewis
