Academic Research

I have a primary interest in the development and application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to practical engineering problems in all aspects of low speed aerodynamics, computational acoustics, heat transfer, combustion and fire safety.

Recent EPSRC supported programmes have included the following research projects

• Combined simulation and experimental validation of visibility in smoke laden environments
• Numerical and experimental studies of pool fires
• Radiation heat transfer in gas turbine combustors
• The prediction of smoke properties and obscuration in compartment fires
• The effects of ambient vitiation on fire development and toxic emission
• Glazing systems and wall linings in fires
• Coupled CFD and material properties from fire tests for fire spread prediction in buildings

I supervise PhD and MSc research projects across a broad selection of topics. Applications are always welcome for PhD, MPhil and MSc by Research degrees in all topics related to the application and development of CFD to practical engineering problems.
