This section contains some examples of the work produced by students when active learning has been incorporated into lectures and tutorials. The examples are mainly from research methods modules, as this is where the learner centred approach is more directly reflected in the final work produced by the student, though others have also been included.

Each of the research proposals and projects below was produced in the context of a Research Methods module where students were asked to develop individual research topics.

Research Proposals

  • ‘To what extent can the nomination and subsequent confirmation of John G. Roberts, Jr. as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court be regarded as bipartisan? A qualitative analysis based primarily on the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing. Consideration of the media perspective will be afforded through the qualitative text analysis of relevant New York Times news articles and editorial comment.' (Level 5). View the proposal here.

  • 'A comparative study to investigate the link between an MP's majority and their level of activity in local and national press, in the 2001-2005 Parliament.' (Level 5). View the proposal here.

  • 'Does Tony Blair answer the question? An analysis of his performance at Prime Minister's Question Time since the 1997 General Election.' (Level 5). View the proposal here.

  • 'Compare and contrast the public and media perception and knowledge of female parliamentarians, carried out by the use of questionnaires in Grimsby, Cleethorpes and surrounding areas. Also, by analysing media coverage of the 2005 Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat conferences, by comparing tabloid and broadsheet newspapers.' (Level 5). View the proposal here.

  • 'UN Peacekeeping operations in Somalia and the Former Republic of Yugoslavia: qualitative text analysis of how American involvement was transformed under a UN mandate from peacekeeping, to war fighting, in both Somalia and the Former Republic of Yugoslavia.'
