
The Palmes family held land in Naburn, East Yorkshire, from the 13th century. Their papers include title deeds and correspondence of the Reverend William Lindsay Palmes (1813-1888), who was a distinguished modern linguist and vicar of Hornsea and Riston [DDPA/7/207-243; DDPA(2)/3/1, 3]. Other papers include an original bundle relating to tithes for the rectory of St George 1618-1775 and Acaster Malbis 1605-1775 [DDPA/7/135-154, 188-192]; the 1768 agreement of the Reverend William Barrett, vicar of Naburn, to accept allotments in lieu of tithes [DDPA/7/290] and a copy of the letters patent granting to Sir John Nevill the site of Nun Monkton Priory in 1538 [DDPA/8/1].
