Charles Chichester (1795-1847) attended Stonyhurst Catholic seminary before beginning an army career. He served in the Carlist War and in the West Indies and Canada. His wife, Mary Chichester (1801-1871), travelled with him. Letters and diaries survive for both of them and Mary Chichester's diaries reflect her religious preoccupations [DDCH/86-87, 152]. The collection also includes letters, school diaries and reports of their sons who were educated at Stonyhurst [DDCH/60, 93, 156]. Specifically religious material includes several relic authentications, manuscript notes of the lives of the Saints, a printed account of the trial of Titus Oates in 1685, and a letter about the death and boycotted funeral of a Canadian Catholic convert, Allan Napier McNab (1798-1862) [DDCH/66, 128, 148-151, 158].
