The Stapleton (Barons Beaumont) family originally came from Richmondshire before settling in Carlton. There are medieval title deeds relating to monastic lands they owned at Marrick Priory. The family retained the old faith after the Reformation and recusancy accounts 1616-1649 survive [DDCA/29/1]. The 19th-century correspondence of the 8th Lord Beaumont (1805-1854), the 9th Lord Beaumont (1848-1892) and Lady Violet Isaacson throws light on their involvement in Catholic affairs and the Catholic education of their children [DDCA(2)/52/7-9, 23]. Miscellaneous material includes extracts of the records of the English Benedictine monks at Douai about Gregory Stapleton (1642-1680) and of the English Benedictine convent at Cambrai about Mary Stapleton (1648-1668), as well some authentication of relics, a copy of J B Milburn's The Oxford Movement published by the Catholic Truth Society and an 1891 history of Selby Abbey [DDCA(2)/54/19-22, 27, 30-32, 58].
