The Brotherton Library at the University of Leeds has two substantial Quaker
archives, known as the Carlton Hill and the Clifford Street collections, named after
their former homes in Leeds
and York. Together these archives contain the records of Yorkshire General Meeting,
and of six Monthly Meetings, namely Brighouse (which includes Bradford, Halifax and
Huddersfield, and also Leeds up to 1923), Knaresborough, Leeds (from 1924), Settle,
Thirsk, and York. With the exception of Leeds Monthly Meeting all these records
begin in the 17th century, and continue largely unbroken until either the present day or
(in the case of Knaresborough and Thirsk) until Monthly Meeting areas were
reorganised in the 19th century. Many Preparative Meeting records are also present,
and these, too, often begin in the 17th century. Minute books predominate, but registers of births, deaths and burials, lists of
members and attenders, accounts, records of sufferings and other documents are also plentiful. In total, the
archives contain about 2,300 items. The Brotherton Library additionally holds very
extensive collections of Quaker printed books, notably the Birkbeck Library (about 6000 books) and the Leeds Friends Old Library
(about 850 items).
