The Institute holds
several Quaker collections, primarily dealing with individual Quaker families and
institutions established by them. Collectively they fill about 2,200 archival
boxes. The family material includes the correspondence and papers (1763 - late 19th
century) of generations of the Tuke family, prominent Quakers in York, and related
families. The largest institutional archives are those of The Retreat at York, founded by
local Quakers in 1796 to provide humane treatment for the mentally ill. The voluminous
records range from the 1790s to 1939. More recent Quaker material includes the
papers and social survey material of Benjamin Seebohm Rowntree (1871-1954) and the business
records of the Quaker-established chocolate and sweet manufacturing company,
Rowntree & Co. of York. A small series of minute books of The Mount School,
established in 1831, are also available. The Institute’s Library also includes the Quaker library
deposited by The Retreat. In addition, the Anglican records of the 17th and 18th
centuries include much material on Quaker prosecutions.
