Access conditions
A 50 year closure period is enforced in agreement with several Monthly Meetings in Yorkshire,
and this applies to all records produced and deposited by the Society of Friends
at Leeds University Library and Hull University Brynmor Jones Library. Specific written permission must be obtained directly from the Meeting in question where researchers require access to more recent records.
This closure period does not apply to appropriate officers of the Meeting.
Other Monthly Meetings retain
confidential records in their own custody and only deposit records when they are
over 50 years' old.
A general 30 year closure period is applicable to Quaker collections held at the Borthwick Institute, which comprise mainly personal and business papers. The exceptions are certain types of records of The Retreat, principally patients' records, which are closed for 100 years. Further information can be obtained from the York Health Trust archivist,
at the
Institute.
Access to the collections is normally granted to researchers after application in writing to
the repository holding the material, and then by appointment. Contact details
for archive repositories in Britain are available on
ARCHON.
The location
register includes a note of access conditions and contact details for each
collection described.
