Elections and Electioneering

There are poll books for: Beverley in 1774, 1784, 1799, 1802, 1818, 1826, 1835, 1852, 1854, 1857 and 1868, plus manuscript analyses of the books for 1790, 1799, 1812; poll books for the East Riding in 1837 and 1868; for Hull in 1868; and for York in 1841.

There are also numerous references to elections at Beverley. These include: financial accounts (2) and vouchers (2) for the election of 1784, with an account of the votes cast [DDSY(3)/5/10, 45-46, 72]; photocopies of 150 posters, addresses and squibs from elections between 1799 and 1868 [DX/150/7/1-21]; broadsheets for the elections of October 1812, June 1818 and February 1820 [DDCV/15/202-206]; the return by Sir Thomas Slingsby, Sheriff of Yorkshire, of John Wharton and Charles Forbes on their election as MPs, October 1812 [DDLA/2/2]; election pamphlets addressed by Charles Langdale to the voters in 1832 [DDLA/2/11]; registers of electors for 1839, 1846, 1856, 1863, 1865 [DDMM/2/105-107, 109-113]; some 29 election cards for the 1880-1939 period [DDMM/2/119]; the circular letter of Anthony Trollope from October 1868 announcing his intention to stand in the next election [DDMM/2/115]; and an original bundle of miscellaneous material relating to Parliamentary elections in 1835, 1837, 1852, 1854, 1857, 1859 [DDCV/15/589-596]. Several items concern Mayoral elections [DX/150/3/1-10], including six broadsheets from 1824 [DDMM/2/98]. Municipal elections are also represented, including a set of photocopies of notices of polls, results of polls, addresses, meetings, a voting paper, expenses of returning officers, and miscellaneous notices for the 1832-1904 period [DX/150/6/1-51].

Similarly, for the East Riding, there is: a set of photocopies of some 20 posters for Parliamentary elections, 1835-37 [DX/150/19]; an original bundle relating to the elections of 1880 with some 30 letters to George England, agent for the Conservative candidates, Christopher Sykes and W H Harrison Broadley (March-April 1880), posters and forms for the declaration of secrecy, April 1880 [DRA/1068-1074]; there are also the addresses of candidates (5), [DAS/29/35], and that of G R Bethell in 1886 [DAS/29/34].

For the North Riding, for 1835 there is: a copy of the address of James Walker to the electors, and accounts and vouchers for the travelling expenses of voters, horse hire and other payments on behalf of William Duncombe and James Walker [DDCV(2)/67/1-2]; and for 1868 a polling card for the election of Joseph Dunnington Jefferson [DDJ/34/25].

For Hull, there are: posters (8) for Parliamentary elections between 1802-1837 [DX/150/19]; a broadsheet and squib for April 1859 [DAS/29/20]; and addresses of candidates and election cards (7) in 1880 [DAS/29/34].

Other miscellaneous items include: an undated electioneer's canvassing book for Mappleton and Rowlston (candidates R Bethell and H Broadley) [DBR/10]; a register of electors for Patrington, 1849 [DDCV/204/A/F/41-42]; a polling card for the election of John Dunnington Jefferson at Selby, November 1868 [DDJ/34/26], with a card showing the state of the poll there [DDJ/34/27]; and a canvass book for Thorganby with West Cottingwith in 1868 [DDJ/34/21].

For York, there is: an original bundle of newspapers, posters, bills, songs and squibs regarding Parliamentary elections for the County in 1780 and 1784 [DDWA/13/12]; and a printed notice of Agreement between candidates for the decorous conduct of elections, October 1774 [DDMM/26/1].

For Yorkshire in general, there are: eight posters for Parliamentary elections, 1807-1830 [DX/150/19]; an original (and select) bundle relating to the election of 1868, including correspondence, canvass returns, polling cards, and polling returns [DDJ/34/20-29]; and some sixteen election squibs, c.1780-1790 [DDJ/29/4].

Beyond Yorkshire, there are: letters from Henry Preston to his wife Maria Ann regarding the election at Great Yarmouth and his own candidacy, June 1830 [DDPR/50/26]; an election notice of the chairing of Lord Palmerston at Tiverton, June 1835 [DDCH/146]; and correspondence of Charles Selby Rigge, Bourton Grange, Wenlock, concerning the Parliamentary election for South Shropshire and Wenlock, May-September 1865 [DDFA/39/52].
