What is MRI? |
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Pictures are produced using a magnetic field which is approximately 10,000 times stronger than the Earth's magnetic field.
Why do I need the scan? |
MRI produces images which are much more detailed than other techniques such as CT or ultrasound. |
Is it safe? |
Another big advantage of MRI is that it does not use any ionising radiation like CT.
It is extremely safe so long as certain precautions are taken.
What will I have to do? |
You will have to remove all lose metal items such as coins, watches, jewellery (but not wedding rings) etc.
You will be asked about any medical device/implant that excludes you from the scan (for example pacemakers).
You are then safe to enter the scan room.
What will the scan be like? |
You have to lie on a bed which is then moved into the scanner. Depending on what you are having scanned will depend on whether you enter the scanner head or feet first.
The scanner consists of a short cylinder similar to a CT scanner but slightly longer.
The scanner is fairly noisy when it is working so you will be given ear-plugs.
How long will the scan be? |
This depends on what you are having scanned. Your whole examination may last 30-40 minutes.
