
Data Manager/Researcher
JOHN NICHOLLS joined the HMAP project in July 2004 moving from a career in Technical Authorship and IT Training. He graduated from the University of Humberside with a Honours degree in Administrative Management. He has also studied Ancient History (UNISA), Civil Engineering Surveying (HNC), Systems Analysis (BCS Postgraduate Certificate), and Philosophy (BA) at Birkbeck, London University. He changed direction to ICT and has gained MCSE status (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer). Recent studies have led to a pure Research Masters degree in the Philosophy of Mind (Philosophical Psychology). His latest studies are in the field of Psychotherapy and he is currently engaged in advanced training as a Gestalt Psychotherapist with the Scarborough Psychotherapy Training Institute (SCPTI).
His activities within the HMAP project are primarily in the IT field where he is responsible for the development and design strategies surrounding the project's Database and Information repositories. Further activities involve website design and maintenance for the MHSC (this site), ICT installations and network support. He has recently worked with the star rated EU INCOFISH project team, carrying out Data Management, research and related tasks for the project. He has carried out website design and related activities for the following research projects: British Arctic Whaling (BAW), Caravane Maritime, North Atlantic Fisheries History Association (NAFHA) and Oceans Past. Apart from the MHSC, he has been webmaster for several of the University of Hull's Departments including History, Philosophy, and American Studies. Further activities have included assisting and instructing Maritime History postgraduate students in the use of database technology for research, as well as a healthy dose of historiographical philosophy. Most recently he has been engaged in the programming, research and development of the Far Horizons for Schools interactive, web-based learning package for school children that incorporates local and global maritime historical themes in a geographical, 3D setting.
