MediCET can offer a wide range of services to industry from working with an organisation to help develop new products or to take an existing product forward to performing tests and evaluating materials to determine if they are fit for their intended use. MediCET can also perform feasibility studies and background research studies to help determine the viability of an idea.

Some of the work MediCET has performed includes; designing a new throat valve for patients who have had a tracheotomy allowing them to talk again.  The new valves have a longer life expectancy than the traditional valves, which on average have to be replaced every 3 months.  MediCET has also developed a fracture plate that can be used on patients who have had hip replacements as it utilises fewer mechanical fasteners than existing designs allowing it to work with artificial hip joints, and the cements used to fasten them in place.  Companies have also come to MediCET to simply utilise the MicroCT scanning facility in order to gain data on ancient artefacts.

As MediCET is part of the University it is also has a role to play in researching new technologies to take the field of medical engineering forward, this means that there are a number of academics who work within the unit who are experts in the field of medical engineering and are always looking for new research opportunities. MediCET can also supply companies with training courses and teaching within the field of medical engineering, which can be tailored to an organisation and contribute towards an employees CPD.

There may be local and central Government funding available for some of these activities, particularly when carried out in partnership with the University, for example:

There is also some special funding available for local companies and SMEs, for example, through the Design Enterprise Centre (DEC). The University's Research and Enterprise Office can provide more information, or contact MediCET directly.
