Lipids are strategic raw materials, in the form of natural oils and fats, for the oleochemicals industry. In addition to being important foodstuffs, they are also known to moderate many disease processes and are of current interest to the pharmaceutical industry. The vision of the Lipid Research Centre, based at the University of Hull, is to develop multidisciplinary research in this field. It is well-equipped for all lipid work with first class facilities in fermentation technology and plant growth, as well as strong capabilities in genetics and molecular biology including DNA sequencing and PCR technology. Against a background of industrial experience and expertise, the Lipids Research Centre has developed and gained an international reputation for research. Key advances in microbial and plant lipid research have been made and molecular biologists, geneticists, biochemists and enzymologists are all active within the Centre.
