Books or journals not available in the Brynmor Jones Library or Keith Donaldson Library may be obtained through the Document Supply Service. At other times you may wish to visit other libraries in person. Details of access arrangements to libraries which you may find useful are listed below. You may also wish to check the relevant Library web page before your visit - many of these can be found via the directory of library catalogues and services in Britain and Ireland maintained by NISS. SCONUL vacation access scheme
This is the vacation access scheme of the Standing Conference of National and University Libraries and covers all higher education institutions in the UK. This scheme will enable you to use all libraries including those which are not members of UK Libraries Plus during the vacations for reference purposes only.
Undergraduates and postgraduates on taught courses are normally granted reference use of other university libraries free of charge during the vacations of the host university. If you request admittance to another university library, you will normally be asked to present proof of your current membership of the University of Hull. A current Student Card will normally be acceptable. Sometimes it may be necessary to show evidence of when your course ends; you are recommended to check with the other library as policies may differ. You are advised to telephone in advance of your visit to make sure about vacation dates, opening times and documentation required.
The SCONUL vacation access scheme does not provide for borrowing. Policies on access to electronic sources of information may differ.
Open University students
Open University students may register as Associate Readers for reference use only without charge.
The British Library
The London reading rooms of the British Library are open for reference use only. Passes must be obtained from the British Library for admittance to the Reading Rooms.
The British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC ) Reading Room at Boston Spa
The Reading Room at the British Library's northern site is open to all visitors over the age of 14. Reference books, bibliographies and abstracting and indexing publications are available on open access. Any available item in the Document Supply Centre's collections of seven million publications can be consulted in the Reading Room. Request forms for ordering stock items in advance of your visit are available at the Enquiry Desk in the Brynmor Jones Library or in the Keith Donaldson Library. For further details see http://www.bl.uk/.
The minibus service to the Reading Room has been withdrawn. However the facilities are still available if students wish to make their own travel arrangements.
From Friday 24th July 2009 a new cashless system will be installed in the Boston Spa Reading Rooms. In order for readers to use the photocopying facilities and electronic printing they will now be required to register at the enquiries desk at Boston Spa and by using their debit/credit card or cash , deposit money into their account before being able to copy any items.
Access to the libraries of Hull College and Bishop Burton College
Last year the Library piloted a scheme allowing students on programmes validated by the university at Bishop Burton College and Hull College to have the same access and borrowing rights as our own undergraduates (with the exception that they do not have off-campus access to our electronic resources since this is not permitted under the terms of our licences). The scheme was judged a success and has therefore been extended.
The two colleges participating in this scheme are able to provide reciprocal library access to a limited number of our staff and students, who will be able to use the two libraries for reference purposes throughout their normal opening hours and borrow up to five books for a period of two weeks. If you would like to use either Bishop Burton College library or Hull College library, please apply at the reception desk in the Brynmor Jones Library or at the main desk in the Keith Donaldson Library. A card will be given to you, which you should then take to the other library where you will be able to register for the remainder of the session. Cards are limited in the first instance to 50 per college library, and they will be issued on a first come first served basis. Books borrowed from the college libraries must be returned to that library, and not to either the BJL or the KDL.
