This is the website of the Insurance History Group, a new international network of scholars researching all aspects of the history of the insurance industry, and of related topics such as the history of risk and uncertainty, and natural and man-made disasters.
The network first came together in 2008 in response to the session on 'Insurance in History' organised for the XVth World Economic History Congress, to be held in Utrecht, the Netherlands, 3-7 August 2009, and the pre-conference meeting to be held at the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue, Zurich, Switzerland, 9 July 2009. You will find links on the left of this page to the original call for papers for the session in Utrecht, the draft programmes of both meetings, and the abstracts of the papers to be presented. The full papers will be posted here from 30 April 2009.
It is anticipated that this website will provide a forum for insurance history research well beyond the conferences of 2009. Further additions to the website will be made in due course, including a bulletin board for members of the group and other interested scholars, news of further conferences and events or grants of interest to members, a regularly updated bibliography of research in insurance history, and links to other relevant websites, including academic associations, research resources, business archives and museums.
