NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
An 18-month part-time course designed to provide the knowledge and understanding that underpins competent performance as an occupational health and safety practitioner. The course leads to a professional qualification that satisfies the academic requirements for corporate membership of the recognised professional body in the field, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
Many employers specify the NEBOSH Diploma as a minimum requirement for the person entrusted to advise them competently on health and safety. At this level, job opportunities are broad, offering great challenges to those seeking to develop a career in a demanding and developing profession.
Course
Structure
The course is delivered over two academic sessions. The first session runs from
September to July and the second session runs from the following September to
March. Attendance is one evening each week (Tuesdays) plus three block weeks
in the first academic session and one evening each week (Thursdays) plus one
block week in the second.
The syllabus comprises three core units as detailed below. Units A and B are delivered in the first academic session, and Unit C delivered in the second. Each unit is assessed with one written examination. The written examinations are held in January (Unit A), July (Unit B), and January in the second academic session (Unit C). The final means of assessment is completion of a work-based assignment (Unit D) at the end of the course covering subject matter from the whole syllabus. Coursework is also set by the University during Units A, B and C that comprise workplace-based assignments in order to support learning of the material and provide invaluable experience for tackling the Unit D assignment.
This course can be taken separately or as part of the BSc in Occupational Safety and Environmental Management degree programme.
Course
Content
Indicative content of the three core units is outlined below:
Principles of health and safety management. Loss causation and incident investigation. Identifying hazards. Assessing and evaluating risk. Risk control and emergency planning. Organisational factors. Human factors. Principles of health and safety law. Criminal law. Civil law. Measuring health and safety performance.
Unit B: Hazardous Agents in the Workplace
General aspects of occupational health and hygiene. Principles of toxicology and epidemiology. Evaluating risk from chemical agents. Preventive and protective measures concerning hazardous substances. Monitoring and maintenance of control measures concerning hazardous substances. Biological agents. Noise and vibration. Radiation and thermal environment. Psycho-social agents. Ergonomic agents.
Unit C: Workplace and Work Equipment
General workplace issues. Principles of fire and explosion. Workplace fire risk assessment. Storage. handling and processing of dangerous substances. Work equipment. Machinery safety. Mechanical handling. Electrical safety. Safety in construction and demolition. Environmental pollution and waste management.
Unit D: Application of Health and Safety Theory and Practice
A workplace-based assignment drawing upon knowledge and understanding of material in Units A, B and C. Comprises an analysis of the health and safety management system and undertaking two risk assessments of significant hazards in a chosen workplace.
Entry Requirements
Applicants would normally possess the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or other qualification in health and safety at level 3 or above. However other qualifications and/or experience can be considered. Please include a CV and copies of certificates when applying for a place.
If the qualification is not recent, it may be necessary for the applicant to demonstrate that their knowledge has been kept up-to-date. This could be achieved by demonstrating an extensive involvement in, or study of, health and safety.
Cost
The course fee for the first academic session (Units A & B) is £2640 (payable when registering at the start of your first session of study on the course).
The course fee for the second academic session (Units C & D) is £1475 (payable when registering at the start of your second session of study on the course).
(Please note it is not possible to pay the course fee for all four Units, i.e. £4115, at one time).
In addition a registration fee (£50) and examination fee (£75) for each unit would be payable to NEBOSH (total fee £350).

NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management
Introduction
The purpose of the National Diploma is to equip people who have experience in occupational safety and health to undertake responsibilities in relation to risks of damage to the environment posed by work activities.
Occupational and environmental hazards from work activities are in many cases close linked: often springing from the same basic cause. Many safety practitioners are therefore being asked to advise management on the control of environmental risks. In some larger organisations with particularly hazardous activities there may be specialist staff responsible for the control of risks to the environment; in these cases it is essential that the safety practitioner should understand clearly the nature of the environmental hazards, and be able to cooperate in the development of coordinated control strategies which will address both the occupational and environmental risks.

Structure
Attendance is one evening each week plus three block weeks in each year from
September to May. Assessment is by means of one workplace-based assignment and
one written examination held in June.
This course can be taken separately or as part of the BSc in Occupational Safety and Environmental Management degree programme.

Requirements
Applicants will normally hold the NEBOSH Health & Safety Diploma, or an
equivalent qualification.
Candidates with a level 3 health and safety qualification (e.g. the NEBOSH certificate or equivalent) and a suitable higher education qualification can also be considered. Please include a CV and copies of certificates when applying for a place.

The course fee is £2200.
In addition an examination fee of £75 and an assignment fee of £45 will be payable to NEBOSH.

BSc (Honours) in Safety and Environmental Management
Introduction
When enrolling on the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or the NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management here at the University of Hull, you will also be enrolled onto our BSc degree programme in Safety and Environmental Management!
This is our 4 year part-time degree programme that enables successful candidates to be able to demonstrate a high level of technical knowledge and understanding in the safety and environmental management field. This allows students to reinforce or further a career in this exciting and rapidly developing area.
Progress through the degree programme is flexible. If your key interest is to attain the NEBOSH National Diploma or Environmental Diploma, no problem! Upon successful completion of a Diploma, you can leave the course at the appropriate point with that qualification under your belt. Alternatively you can continue your studies and add the BSc qualification to your NEBOSH diploma(s). The choice is yours.
Course
Structure
Each year of the course runs from September through to the following June or
July (depending upon the year of study) with attendance being one evening each
week plus a number of block weeks depending on the year of study, details are
given below.
The overall structure of the 4 year BSc programme is as follows:
Year 1: NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety (Units A & B). Attendance Tuesday evenings plus 3 block weeks.
Year 2: NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety (Units C & D). Attendance Thursday evenings plus 1 block week.
Year 3: NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management. Attendance Wednesday evenings plus 3 block weeks.
Year 4: Details below. Attendance Monday evenings plus 3 block weeks.
Details of the contents for the NEBOSH courses will be on other leaflets provided in your information pack. Year 4 of the programme consists of 4 modules in the following subject areas:

Currently it is not possible for candidates to enrol directly onto Year 4 of the BSc course if the candidate has not previously studied at the University of Hull.

NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management
The qualification focuses on UK law and environmental management systems. It has been designed to allow candidates to gain a level of underpinning knowledge necessary to help ensure their organisation is able to meet its responsibilities under environmental legislation. Candidates will learn how to carry out environmental impact assessments of their organisation’s activities and be able to identify the range of environmental protective and preventative measures required.
The qualification also provides a sound basis for progression on to the NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management. This in turn allows entry on to the University’s successful part-time BSc in Safety and Environmental Management.
The Environmental Management Certificate will benefit companies who are seeking to implement effective environmental management systems, ensuring that line managers have a sound understanding of the principles of managing environmental risk. It is relevant to all industry sectors.
Course Structure
Attendance is one day each week for 8 consecutive weeks. As well as sessions covering the syllabus below, sessions covering examination technique and revision are included. Assessment is by means of one written examination at the end of the course and a practical environmental review of the student’s own workplace.

Ethical, legal and financial reasons for maintaining and promoting environmental management
The legal framework for the regulation of environmental management
Environmental management systems, including:
Reasons for implementing an environmental management system
Key features and content of an effective EMS (e.g. ISO14001)
Environmental impact assessments, including:
The key sources of environmental information used during environmental impact assessments
The principles and practice of environmental impact assessments
Control of emissions to air, including:
The principles of air quality standards
The main types of air emissions and control measures available to reduce them
Control of contamination of water resources, including:
The importance of water quality for life
The main sources of water pollution and control measures available to reduce contamination
Solid waste and land use, including:
The importance of minimising waste and the principles of waste management
The risks associated with contaminated land
Sources and use of energy and energy efficiency, including:
Benefits and limitations of alternative sources of energy
The importance of, and controls measures available to ensure, energy efficiency
Control of environmental noise, including:
The potential sources of environmental noise and methods available to control them
Planning for and dealing with environmental emergencies, including:
Measures that need to be in place to ensure the emergency preparedness of an organisation

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
Cost
The course fee is £700.
In addition a registration fee of £40 for the examination and £20 for the practical assessment would be payable to NEBOSH.

An IT and study facility is provided at the Institute for all safety and environmental students. It contains a reference library of books and videos, and a video/computer room containing reference databases and word processing facilities.
All safety and environmental students also have full and free access to the Technical Indexes online health & safety and environmental information services throughout their studies. This allows the capability to access and print documents from a large database of safety and environmental information (including legislation, HSE guidance and a wide range of reference from other third parties) from any internet-connected computer.
