Materials Analysis Laboratory

The Institute for Chemistry in Industry operates a commercial Materials Analysis Service for  industry from a dedicated and equipped Materials Analysis Laboratory.

 

The Materials Analysis laboratory has a wide and varied client base from sole traders to multinational companies.  Industries that have used the Laboratory include:

Rubber processing

Caravan (and component) manufacture 

Engineering and engineering services

Heating and Ventilation Manufacturers

Marine surveying

Electronics

Plastics processing

Paint manufacture

Automotive component manufacture

Legal services

Construction industry

 

Work undertaken for clients has included:

  • The identification of contaminants in plastic engineering components
  • The investigation of adhesion failures in sealants and adhesives
  • The identification of components within composite plastic products
  • The investigation of contaminants in cargoes
  • Materials identification generally
  • Materials specifications
  • Materials failure analyses
  • Rubber and plastics analysis generally

The Materials Analysis Laboratory of the Institute for Chemistry in Industry is equipped with the following instrumentation:

  • Mettler TGA/DSC1 Thermogravimetric analysis with STAR software
  • Mettler TA3000 with TG50 thermobalance and DSC30 sub-ambient DSC
  • Nicolet Nexus FTIR with MCT detector, diamond ATR, specular reflectance & diffuse reflectance
  • Nicolet 380 FTIR with DTGS detector and Smart Orbit diamond ATR

In addition the Institute has direct access to the extensive facilities within the Departments of Chemistry and Physics which include:

  • UV/vis
  • ICP MS and ICP Emission
