Environmental
Adaptation

The plants and animals that first colonised the island have evolved, over the millennia, to fill as many of the available niches as possible. The subtropical north coast of Tenerife is clearly a very favourable environment but other parts of the island present severe challenges to living things. Some of the challenges specific to Tenerife are examined in these pages.

  • Heat and drought
  • Moist conditions in the cloud zone
  • High levels of UV radiation
  • Frequent fires
