Middleton Hall

Drama Facilities

Drama and Music students at Hull enjoy unprecedented access to theatre making facilities.

The Gulbenkian Centre is a hub of activity for Drama students. It’s home to two main performance spaces, workshops, and design studios.

The newly-refurbished Middleton Hall offers high-quality rehearsal spaces to develop productions for public performances at the University.

This is your home when studying drama at Hull. Working collaboratively with staff throughout your course, the aim is for you to take over this space, with students ultimately becoming responsible for every element of a production process.

The Anthony Minghella Studio

The Anthony Minghella Studio is an experimental-teaching and theatre-production space. Complete with a sound and light control room, most of the school's internal productions take place in the Studio, organised by the student and staff run Events Committee.

On practical projects, the Production Manager, Designer and Construction Manager work together to orchestrate all of the administrative elements that lead to the design and construction of a theatre set.

The Donald Roy Theatre

The Donald Roy Theatre lies at the heart of the Gulbenkian Centre. It's one of the best departmental theatres in any European university and is the primary venue for all public productions. The space in the main house is very adaptable, with mobile seating blocks enabling productions to be staged in a variety of ways. At the front of the theatre are the Foyer, Box Office and Refreshment areas. Above the auditorium are the lighting and sound control suites.

The Old Boilerhouse

Crucial to the delivery of the design and construction elements of our drama programmes, students have full supervised access to these facilities. The workshop includes a metalworking area, woodworking area, set assembly area, model box lighting, a performance space studio, CAD/CAM computer suite, and design studio.

Middleton Hall

Following a £9.5 million investment, Middleton Hall has been transformed into a world-class cultural venue and offers our students some of the finest facilities around. The centrepiece is a 400-seater concert hall. This versatile venue is the perfect setting for classical music, and with adaptable acoustics, it's also regularly used as a surround-sound cinema and theatre space.

Middleton Hall also boasts music studios and recording equipment that rivals the best commercial studios. The studios include a huge 48-channel mixing desk - one of the finest ambisonic studios in the country, meaning that listeners can experience 3D sound. Our students have access to the studios around the clock. We've installed very latest lighting and sound performance technologies, improving the quality of scenography in all performances. The design offers greater comfort to spectators, improved sightlines, a partially sprung stage floor and a more refined acoustic experience.
