Site navigationMost modern web browsers should display this site reasonably well and let you navigate through the various sections. The maps Holderness are presented as 60 strips, each 1.2km wide and 1km high. These strips cover the complete coastline from Sewerby in the north to Spurn Point in the south. To access any section just click on the index map displayed on the right of the home page. When the selected map is displayed you may move to the map above by clicking on the blue bar at the top of the photograph or to the map below by clicking the bar at the bottom. Measuring distancesIf you are using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (version 5.0 or better) or Mozilla Firefox you will be able to take advantage of a Javascript ruler tool that will enable you to measure distances on the maps. This makes it much easier to calculate accurate rates of erosion.
Move the mouse pointer to the point you wish to measure from and left-click. A crosshair will be drawn on the map at this point. The status panel at the bottom left of the browser window will then be continually updated, as you move the pointer over the image, to show the distance and compass bearing from this mark to the cursor.
If you are using Mozilla Firefox and the ruler result do not appear in the status bar it may because your browser settings are not correct. This can be fixed by selecting Tools | Options | Content | Advanced and then checking the Allow scripts to change status bar text option box. Locating the cliff edge.Because of the map resolution, it is not always easy to identify the cliff edge on the yellow Ordnance Survey overlay. On most of the maps the high water mark is visible as a solid line, often with a stippling, indicating a beach, to the east of this. The cliff slope is represented by a shaded area of varying width, depending on the slope and height, to the west of this. If in doubt measure to the end of a field boundary, they are easy to see clearly and usually end at the cliff top. |
