Employment Since Graduation 1969
- 1969 - 1974 Budenberg Gauge Ltd, Altrincham, Cheshire.
- 1974 - 1981 University of Salford, Salford, Lancs.
- 1981 - Present University of Hull, Hull, East Yorkshire.
Research Interests
- Techniques in design for manufacture and assembly
- Capability analysis and probabilistic design
- Flexible assembly and inspection systems.
- Stress concentrations and fatigue analysis
Research in design for manufacture began in the mid 1970s in collaboration
with Professor Geoffrey Boothroyd's Group at the University of
Massachusetts USA and led to the creation of techniques in design for
assembly (DFA). Research is currently focused on the notion of Proactive
DFA and on new techniques in capable and reliable design.
Activity in flexible automation and inspection has resulted in the development
of a novel laser-based technique for component orientation in automatic
assembly. A distinctive feature of the technique is its ability to identify minor
variations in component geometry and features. The method has been
successfully applied to the problem of tool condition monitoring in advanced
machine tools and unmanned manufacturing situations.
The interest in stress analysis started while working in industry on the
problems of designing products for operation under extreme pressure.
Understanding the effect of stress concentration features and the calculation
of local stresses is crucial in the determination of product life. The research
in recent years has concentrated on aerostuctural problems and has been
carried out in close collaboration with stress and fatigue specialists in BAe
MA&A.
