Note: each dictionary lemma, be it Dutch or German, always groups all the word
forms, namely both the forms with so-called Dutch and the forms with so-called

Note: the allocation of a word form to a given lemma has to be seen as a suggestion
and not as a definite allocation -- the linguistic mixture makes the interpretation of
certain word forms too uncertain and word forms are also often
corrupt.

Verdam distinguishes between a C and a K, with the C having the quality of a k-sound;
Lexer makes all C with a k-sound equal to K, and all C with an s-sound equal
to an S.
Middle Dutch also distinguishes between an F and a V (voiceless and voiced); Lexer
equates the F to the V
Middle Dutch equates the Z with the S; Lexer has a separate Z, which stands for the
'affricata' [ts].

This is still the most comprehensive presentation of Middle Dutch literary
vocabulary from the beginnings to ca. 1500. It is of course, understandably so, not
complete, nor as systematic as one would like it to be. Moreover, some of the
principles applied by Verdam are foreign to the modern user. As Verdam himself
argues (vol. I, VII), he sacrificed completeness and systematic accuracy to finishing
the work in a reasonable time. When Verdam died in 1919, he had published the
instalments of vol. IX up to 'wedergeven' and reached the lemma 'weigerlike'. F.A.
Stoett completed the dictionary by 1929. For the supplementary material collected by

The editions of texts from KB 128 E 2 which had appeared till then were used in the
compilation of the MNW – see Bouwstoffen (vol.
X).

Verdam's Middelnederlands handwoordenboek (1911) was based on the MNW (A-S), but also included the supplementary material Verdam had collected up to that point. After the completion of the MNW by Stoett (1929), O.H. Ebbinge Wubben revised and updated the dictionary (from the lemma 'sterne') for the second edition of the MNH (1932), incorporating the material from the last volumes of the MNW. Van der Voort van der Kleij used ca. 900 additional sources.
