Spurn
Point
- Work starts on 'obliterated' road (15/03/05)
Events
and the future development of Spurn are controlled mainly
by the ongoing coastal processes that cause the seaward side
to erode particularly at its neck, without any corresponding
growth on the Humber side. This unchecked erosion has given
rise to an ongoing narrowing of the peninsular. A point has
now been reached whereby even moderately rough seas are able
to cause wash-over events, the latest of which occurred over
the weekend of the 12/13 February 2005. On this occasion a
50m length of access road was removed and the peninsular was
reduced to barely 10m in width. Currently the road down at
Spurn is closed and access is only possible across the beach
using 4 wheel drive vehicles. Narrowing of the peninsular
has now left very little space in order to reinstate the road,
which for nature conservation reasons has to be put in on
the seaward side. Attempts are being made to do this, however
it is likely that this new road will have only a limited life.
Erosion and beach movements are now being monitored by East
Riding of Yorkshire Council using GPS surveying and ground
modelling techniques, this will provide a better understanding
of the underlying coastal processes and aid in the future
management of the peninsular. Link
