The
East Riding coastal zone has a considerable rich archaeological
resource. Archaeological site within the East Riding of Yorkshire
range from Mesolithic habitation sites, to Bronze Age burial mounds,
the remains of numerous Iron Age and Romano-British farmsteads and
settlements, medieval villages and associated field systems, castles,
churches, fish-ponds, harbours and landings stages; most of an extensive
system of Roman signal stations on the coast has already been lost.
The post-medieval sites include lighthouses, coastguard stations,
remains associated with the fishing industry, and a wealth of military
installations, including major 20th-century defensive works and
radar stations.
